Chicken Feet, an Asian Speciality
Among numerous interesting new dishes one might find in Asia, Chicken feet are a staple that can be found EVERYWHERE! This dish is one that I have avoided for quite sometime and for good reason.
Known as 닭발 "dakbal" in Korea or 凤爪 "phoenix feet" in China. This dish is a hit for Asian locals and is readily avalible at every convenience store. Yum. Just the type of snack I was looking for.
The Chicken feet cravings don't stop at the convenience stores! There are many restaurants and pubs dedicated to strictly serving this curious dish.
During my stay in Korea, I often saw many chicken foot pubs with lines of people waiting to be seated! With absurdly long lines, I naturally thought they had to be worth a try!
..... boy was I wrong....
When its time to start eating these specimens, there is truly no way to be polite about it. I would say when fully covered in sauce, they are even messier than fully BBQ'd ribs. So you really just have to dive in and get to gnawing.
Now the flavor of these bad boys are definitely an acquired taste.
The have absolutely ZERO meat on them. So it's really just nice bite full of skin and tendons. Yummy!
With minimal flavor residing within the chicken feet themselves, all one really tastes is the sauce they are cooked within. To try to avoid the gelatinous texture of the feet, I prefer the dish to be prepared extra spicy! For the sole reason of numbing my mouth to the jelly like feel of the feet!
So at the end of the day, they weren't really for me.
But who knows, maybe you will like them!
